Summer Bridge Programs

The Summer Bridge programs were created on Oʻahu and Hawaiʻi Island as ways to attract early undergraduates to ʻIke Wai-related STEM fields.

The Oʻahu Summer Bridge was developed as a joint venture between Kapiʻolani Community College and UH Mānoa. Designed for rising sophomores, the program focuses around four main content areas related to ʻIke Wai: Hawaiian culture and community, geology, hydrology, and careers. At the end of the program, interested summer bridge students are recruited into the ʻIke Wai Undergraduate Water Science Scholars program and the School for Ocean and Earth Science and Technology (SOEST) at UH Mānoa.

The Hilo Summer Bridge was developed at UH Hilo for rising freshman and sophomores with an interest in data science, mathematics, and computer science. The program runs for five weeks, giving students an intensive experience, for credit, in mathematics and introductory data science courses.
